“Passing” a free tool doesn’t always mean you are compliant
Accessibility is no longer a “nice to have” in web development: it’s a business, legal, and ethical imperative.
At 4th Season Consulting, we recently took a closer look at our own digital properties to assess Section 508 compliance. Like many organizations, we initially relied on widely available, high-level accessibility tools that reported our site as “compliant.”
What we learned next was eye-opening.
The Hidden Gap Between Tools & True Compliance
Many free or surface-level accessibility scanners focus on automated checks: color contrast, missing alt text, or heading order. These tools are useful, but they only tell part of the story.
Section 508 compliance goes deeper:
-
Keyboard navigation and focus order
-
Screen reader behavior and semantic structure
-
Form labels, error messaging, and ARIA roles
-
Dynamic content and interactive elements
-
PDF and document accessibility
-
Consistency across browsers and assistive technologies
In our case, while automated tools suggested we were compliant, manual testing and deeper audits revealed gaps that would impact real users, especially those relying on assistive technologies.
Why Section 508 Compliance Is Business-Critical
Section 508 is not just about checking a box. It directly affects:
-
User Experience: Accessibility improvements often benefit all users, not just those with disabilities.
-
Brand Trust: Inclusive design signals care, professionalism, and credibility.
-
Procurement Eligibility: Many contracts now require demonstrable accessibility compliance.
- Legal Risk: Especially for organizations working with government, healthcare, education, or regulated industries.
Accessibility failures can quietly disqualify companies from opportunities before a conversation even begins.
Investing In Real Expertise
In response to what we uncovered, we made a deliberate decision:
We invested in deeper education, tooling, and people.
4th Season Consulting now has staff certified in Section 508 accessibility, enabling us to:
-
Go beyond automated scans
-
Identify real-world usability issues
-
Design and remediate with compliance in mind from the start
-
Help clients avoid the same false sense of security we experienced
A Smarter Approach to Accessibility
True accessibility requires a blend of:
-
Automated testing
-
Manual audits
-
User-centered design
-
Ongoing governance and education
It’s not a one-time task. It’s a capability.
We’d Love to Help You Get It Right
If your organization has relied on free tools or surface-level checks, you are not alone. If accessibility matters to your mission, customers, or contracts, it is worth taking a closer look.
We are applying our recent learnings to help other companies:
-
Assess real Section 508 readiness
-
Identify hidden risks
-
Build accessibility into their digital strategy
If you are ready to move beyond “it passed the tool,” we are happy to help!
